The mission of Make-A-Wish® Philippines is to create hope and happiness for children with life threatening illnesses.
In 1980, a seven-year-old boy in Arizona, USA with leukemia inspired the birth of Make-A-Wish®. A group of officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety granted his wish to be a police officer by giving him a custom-made uniform, helmet, badge -- even a helicopter ride! The young boy's delight in having his wish granted inspired the group to form an organization which would grant special wishes of other children.
Make-A-Wish® Philippines is an affiliate of the world’s largest and most respected wish-granting organization, Make-A-Wish® International. Today there are more than 77 U.S. chapters and 30 international affiliates on five continents. Each affiliate raises and spends its own funds, serving the children in its own territory. Each chapter also hosts families from other countries through special arrangements specifically if the wish child’s wish can only be granted in another country. Make-A-Wish® Philippines does not get any form of funding from its parent organization.
The Philippine Affiliate began in 1999 after it was granted the 20th Affiliate status of Make-A-Wish International.
Each year, our chapter grants about a hundred wishes. We also host additional wishes for children from other countries for a special wish experience known as a WISH ASSIST. Internationally, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 160,000 wishes. Today, a child enjoys a Make-A-Wish experience at the rate of one wish per hour, every day around the world.
