General FAQs

Who can receive a wish?

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® is to create hope and happiness for children with life threatening illnesses around the world. Make-A-Wish® Philippines grants wishes to children in their territory, whatever economic status, gender and religion, over the age of 3, and under the age of 18, they must be referred to the Foundation and determined to be medically eligible for a wish grant by their physician based on the foundations list of medical illnesses that are life threatening. The child must clearly express what they wish for. Then child's treating physician along with the foundation makes the final determination whether a child's medical condition qualifies him or her to be a wishchild. Make-A-Wish does not give out cash donations to its beneficiaries. The foundation does not give any medical assistance in any form as well.

Does a child's condition have to be terminal to qualify for a wish?

No. Make-A-Wish Philippines grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses, the foundation has this official list of illnesses to cross check with a potential wish child. A child need not be in the terminal stage to be a candidate for a wish grant.

Are there any restrictions on a wish?

Each Make-A-Wish® chapter follows specific policies and guidelines for granting a child's wish. The physician also plays a major role in determining whether the child's condition will permit a particular wish to be coordinated safely. Foundation volunteers work closely with the wish child's physician to determine the wish granting concept and the most appropriate time to grant the wish, keeping in mind the child's treatment protocol or other concerns. Make-A-Wish® Philippines does not grant any monetary and medical wishes in any form. The foundations does not grant wishes that may be harmful to the wishchild, wishfamily or its volunteers.

Does the family have to pay for the wish?

No. All wish expenses are fully covered, including all travel and spending money when appropriate. One of Make-A-Wish® Philippines' objective is to create a memorable wish experience for both the child and family that is not clouded by financial concerns.

How much does granting a wish cost?

The cost associated with coordinating a wish varies depending on the type of wish. Because each wish is so unique, there is no particular average cost of a wish.

Does the wish family have to meet income qualifications before a child can receive a wish?

No. Family income is not a consideration in determining whether a child is eligible to receive a wish.

What are the most requested wishes?

Most wish requests fall into four major categories:

I wish to go
Some of Make-A-Wish® Philippines’ wish children want to travel to their favorite theme park, while others want to visit exotic beaches, go on a cruise, see snow for the first time, or attend a major sporting event or concert.  Popular wishes for the Philippines are: I wish to go to Enchanted Kingdom, Baguio, or visit their relatives in their respective provinces.
I wish to be
Children search the depths of their imagination when they wish to be someone for a day – a fireman, a police officer, or a model, for instance. Make A Wish ® Philippines has granted wishes to be a priest, a doctor, a policeman, an architect or even a princess for a day.
I wish to meet
Many want to meet their favorite athlete, recording artist, television personality, movie star, politician, or public figure.  Make-A-Wish® Philippines has granted wishes to meet the President, or their favorite movie star or basketball player.  Other more personal wishes such as “I wish to meet my mother” have also been granted.  They get to spend quality time with those they want to meet and interact with them in a very personal level.
I wish to have
Children often wish for a special gift, like a computer, a tree house, a shopping spree, or something that they have coveted for a long time.

Make-A-Wish Philippines does not give any cash to its beneficiaries, it does not give any form of medical assistance as well.

Do you grant wishes to adults?

No.  Make-A-Wish® Philippines only grants wishes to children 3 years old to 18 years old, who are referred to the organization and determined to be eligible for a wish grant.  However, there are other wish-granting organizations that grant wishes to adults.  The foundation may refer them.

What are your sources of funding?

Make-A-Wish® Philippines finances its work through individual contributions, corporate donations, foundation grants, planned gifts, and chapter fees and assessments. The Foundation relies on in-kind contributions to lessen the cost of goods and services and also relies on special events and in-kind donations. Make-A-Wish® Philippines does not solicit contributions over the phone, over email or door-to-door.  FUNDS DONATED TO MAKE-A-WISH® PHILIPPINES DO NOT ACCRUE TO THE BENEFIT OF MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION OF AMERICA, ANY UNITED STATES CHAPTER OF MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION OF AMERICA, OR THE CHILDREN THAT MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION OF AMERICA AND ITS CHAPTERS SERVE.
